This week Stephanie challenged our women's bible study group to give something away that meant something to us.  We didn't have to sell it, just give it away.

But as the Lord moved in our hearts, we decided to sell things to raise some money to give to World Vision.  We are going to collectively give, most likely to help sexually exploited girls.  There are about 20 of us, so I think our current goal is around $2,000.

Steve and I are selling our treadmill.  The day I told Syd about what we were doing, our World Vision gift catalog came in the mail and he decided he wanted to raise money to give some gifts from the catalog.  So a good chunk of his video game collection is now on Craigslist.

Ben wanted to give our child in Chad, Africa a gift for Christmas from himself, so he is selling his Nintendo DS.

Their hearts inspired me more, so I looked throughout our house and posted several more items that have meaning to us.  It's nice to have nice things and hold onto memories, but it doesn't compare with knowing we are helping someone who is really in need.

Giving is contagious.  I dare you to give much more than you receive.

A few Christmases ago, my mom gave each of the grandchildren presents from World Vision.  She cut out the pictures of what she gave on their behalf and presented them to the kids.  "Syd, you are giving soccer balls and Ben, you are giving a backpack."  Then she turned to another one of the young cousins, "and you are giving a child a prosthetic limb!"  The look on his face as she handed him the picture was priceless; a little freaked out to say the least.  But no doubt will appreciate this gift of giving when he's older.

Ahh, Christmas memories.  It is way better to give than to receive!  It really is.
